Parallel vs official

The official exchange rate (TCO) is published by the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) every business day and applies from the next business day.

How the official rate is calculated

Since June 29, 2026 Bolivia has a flexible exchange rate. The TCO is no longer set by the authorities: it is the weighted average of the dollar purchases that banks make from their customers during the day. Each rate is weighted by the amount of its operation. Transactions between financial institutions are not included.

The legal basis is Ministerial Resolution No. 245/2026 and BCB Board Resolution No. 88/2026, both dated June 26, 2026. The first TCO under the new regime was Bs 9.73.

Maximum price when you buy dollars

Banks and exchange houses may not sell you dollars above the TCO plus 10 centavos. With today's rate that ceiling is Bs 12.32. If you are charged more, you can file a complaint with the bank and then with ASFI, the financial regulator (toll-free 800-103-103).

Official vs parallel

Between 2011 and June 2026 the rate was fixed at Bs 6.86 / 6.96 and drifted far from the market price during the dollar shortage. Since the official rate follows real bank operations, the gap with the parallel rate has narrowed: today it is -0.9%. See the parallel rate today.

Where to check it officially

The Central Bank publishes the TCO on its website every business day, and it applies from the next business day. We read it automatically each time it is published and keep a daily series on the history page.

What the official rate is used for

  • Accounting, invoices and tax obligations expressed in foreign currency.
  • The cap for banks and exchange houses when they sell dollars (TCO + Bs 0.10).
  • Card purchases abroad, charged at the Central Bank's reference rate.
  • Contracts and prices that use the "official exchange rate" as their reference.
