What is USDT?

USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin: a crypto token designed to keep a value of one US dollar. In Bolivia it works as a "digital dollar": people buy it with bolivianos from their bank account and sell it back when they need local currency. Its price in bolivianos is the main reference for the parallel dollar rate.

Is it legal in Bolivia?

Bolivia banned crypto assets in its payment system in 2014 and 2020. On June 26, 2024 the Central Bank's Board Resolution No. 082/2024 lifted that ban: banks may now process electronic payments (online banking, apps, transfers, QR) to buy and sell virtual assets. The boliviano is still the only legal tender, crypto assets are not official money, and there is no state guarantee if you lose funds.

How P2P trading works

  1. You pick an ad on a P2P platform (Binance, Bybit, OKX, Bitget, MEXC, among others).
  2. The platform locks the seller's USDT in escrow.
  3. The buyer pays in bolivianos by bank transfer or QR.
  4. The seller confirms the payment in their own bank app and releases the USDT.

Safety tips

  • Never release USDT until the money is in your account. Screenshots can be faked.
  • Only accept payments from an account in the buyer's own name.
  • Keep all communication inside the platform chat.
  • Prefer traders with many completed orders and a high completion rate.
