The Unidad de Fomento de Vivienda (UFV) is a daily index calculated by the Central Bank of Bolivia from the consumer price index published by the national statistics institute (INE). It keeps amounts in bolivianos up to date with inflation.
Worked example
A debt of Bs 1,000 taken when the UFV was 3.20000 and paid when it is 3.34819 becomes 1,000 × (3.34819 ÷ 3.20000) = Bs 1,046.31: 4.63% more, matching the inflation accumulated between both dates.
Where it is used
- Taxes and customs: late tax and customs debts are updated in UFV.
- Loans and savings in UFV: some financial products are set in this unit to keep their value.
- Contracts: rents or long-term obligations can be indexed to the UFV instead of the dollar.
UFV is not the dollar
The UFV follows domestic prices; the dollar follows supply and demand for foreign currency. Over the same period they can move very differently. See Bolivia's inflation and the dollar history.

How the Central Bank calculates it
When the INE publishes a month's inflation, the Central Bank computes the daily UFV values from the 11th of that month to the 10th of the next. That is why the UFV rises a little every day, following the previous month's inflation. The UFV was created in 2001 (Supreme Decree 26390) and is published on the Central Bank's home page together with the official exchange rate.
How to use the calculator
- Enter the original amount in bolivianos.
- Enter the UFV value on the start date (for example, the day a debt or contract began).
- The end value comes preloaded with today's UFV; change it if you need another date.
The result is the amount updated for inflation, and the percentage shows the inflation accumulated between both dates.
